Art Classes

Junior High School

Students of the junior high school must take all subjects and courses established by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in order to satisfy compulsory education requirements. In addition, our school holds skill classes four hours a week at each grade level focusing on drawing and painting and design, developing a unique system of art education which takes the connection to our high school and college programs into consideration. The junior high school in particular focuses on making students aware of the joy that the art world has to offer.

First Year Class

Drawing/Painting

During the first year, students’ ability to utilize the characteristics of sketching, coloring, and shapes is cultivated through classes where tabletop still lifes and portraits are painted in watercolor. Pencil sketching refines the ability to correctly recognize shapes, shape perception, drawing skills, and observation skills. Sensitivity is heightened by openly expressing emotions and knowing the joy which stems from creativity.

Design

In the design classes, students learn about topics such as two and three dimensional design while planning their creations. This allows students to learn about the joy of creation and the greatness of self expression while enhancing the creativity necessary for artistic expression.

Second Year Class

Drawing/Painting

In addition to watercolor painting and pencil sketching studies, which serve as the foundation of both first and second year studies, students experience creating two dimensional works which give the appearance of three dimensional works as well as normal three dimensional works (including material research), which refines their artistic senses by aiming to move beyond the limits of two dimensional expression.

Design

On a routine basis, students have been creating two dimensional designs using natural objects as motifs, serving as the foundation for observational skills and habit acquisition. Through the creation of art such as paper crafts and posters, students study the effects created by materials and colors, refining the expressiveness of their designs.

Third Year Class

Drawing/Painting

In addition to understanding the characteristics of sketching, coloring, and shapes, which are the basics of painting, observation skills relating to the texture and size of objects is refined. This improves students’ ability to depict objects accurately in their works. Students also work on projects in a variety of forms such as picture books, collages, paper works, cloisonnes, and terracottas. This builds up their interest in the relationship between life and art.

Design

Sensitivity and skills are fostered as students continue their study of two and three dimensional design. In assignments, a wide range of materials are selected and then used in students’ art works in order to increase their interest in the fields of design and craftwork

Advancement to the High School

Other than in special cases, all junior high school graduates are allowed to continue their studies at Joshibi High School of Art and Design.

High School

Although our comprehensive high school features curriculums which caters to the many career paths of students, a major feature of this school is the unique system of art education which integrates the junior high school, high school, and college programs.. Through the various art curriculums, students come to understand the joy of the creative process, bringing out a fresh sense of perception and individuality. Our school aims not only to create art specialists, but to foster well-rounded individuals who are useful to society.

First Year Class

Art History

In first year art history, students enjoy viewing images related to Western and Japanese art history and study about the art world’s history and genealogy. (1 unit)

Second Year Class

Drawing/Painting

The second year painting class develops the ability to view shapes accurately through three dimensional plaster sketching activities. In addition, students’ coloring skills and ability to depict objects accurately in their works is fostered through oil painting. The individuality and potential of each student is brought out by studying the expression of objects made out of a variety of molding materials as well as the expression of paintings. (4 units)

Third Year Class

Drawing/Painting

In the third year drawing and painting class, students learn about the construction and form of the human body through creating three dimensional plaster sketches of torso statues as well as full body statues. Oil painting refines students’ expressiveness and depiction skills from painting portraits (live models dressed in costume) on F30 to F50 sized canvases, allowing them to come closer to the essence of painting. In addition, expression and technique is studied pertaining to activities such as drawing, sculpting, and printing which are performed using a variety of methods. Students also work on projects which will prepare them for art college. (8 units)

Design

Color design improves students’ color sensitivity while exploring topics such as the elements of color, spatial awareness, and design. Sketching fosters a high level of expressiveness through the study of how to express shape, contrast, textures, size, and three dimensional principles in designs. Studies focus on issues found in the specialized areas of design. Students also work on projects which will prepare them for the art college. (8 units)

Graduation Works

Students create graduation works in both painting and design which serve as the culmination of the knowledge and skills acquired at our school over three years (or six years when including the Junior High School). The results of their studies at our school, which encompass the design, creation, and presentation of works, are made broadly known to the general public.

Recommendation System

There is a recommendation system for admittance into the College of Art and Design and the Junior College of Art and Design. Exceptional students are recommended based on character, academic performance, and ability.
