Junior high school
- 1)Educational philosophy
- Our educational philosophy is “to stimulate creativity and
heighten sensibilities through art education.” In addition,
the educational objectives for which Joshibi was founded: “to
produce self-reliant women” and “to develop talented women
who can contribute culturally to the nation” remain as educational
objectives even today.
- 2)Curriculum
- The most distinctive feature of our curriculum is the four
hours devoted each week to art. However, the junior high school
comprising part of the compulsory education system, our tuition
focuses on general academic studies six days a week to give
students a broad based education.
- 3)Education path
- Every year, many of our students proceed to higher education
at our affiliated high school. Moreover, 90% or more of our
high school graduates consistently choose to further their
education in art. Whether their next step is university, junior
college, a specialist school or waiting to take an entrance
exam again the next year after a failed attempt, almost all
of our high school graduates seek to specialize further in
art. We believe this is a direct result of the strong artistic
orientation of Joshibi’s educational program.
- 4)Support for path changes
- The decision to change one’s educational path when proceeding
to high school is the prerogative of the individual. Students
who wish to proceed to a high school other than Joshibi are
typically admitted to their first high school of choice each
year.
Students who wish to change their education path after admission
to Joshibi High School of Art and Design are able to switch
their 8 hours of art class each week to other studies in their
third year. These studies include 4 hours of English and 4
hours of an elective subject. In such cases, a teacher is always
assigned to help the student prepare for subsequent entrance
examinations.
- 5)School atmosphere
- Our students enjoying self-expression as much as they do, they
participate very actively in school activities and events.
Students find various ways to express themselves through active
participation in the school festival and athletic meeting.
Moreover, students and teachers communicate freely in a relationship
of mutual trust. Students fill the teachers’ room during break
times and after school. A bright, unconstrained atmosphere
prevails.

- 2)Curriculum
- Our high school offers a general course. The core of the curriculum is 7 - 8
hours of art classes per week, but we also place great weight
on general academic studies as we believe that acquiring
a broad based knowledge is vital to learning art. The school
operates under a six-day-week system. Students are encouraged
to balance their art studies with general academic studies
through our system of recommending graduates who score the
top overall marks in both art and general academic studies
to their faculty of choice at Joshibi University of Art and
Design.

of them now to be successful in achieving their aim of finding
future work in various creative fields. As a result, in both
art classes and school events, students and teachers communicate
freely in a relationship of mutual trust.
